ASCE 1852-2002 Building a Better WorldThe Seismic Effects Committee (SEC) is a technical committee of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), a full service, discipline-oriented, semi-autonomous institute of the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE). The Technical Activities Division is made up of over 70 Technical Committees dealing with a variety of Structural Engineering issues. These committees develop technical publications, technical sessions for conferences, specialty conferences, provide articles for journals and more.

There are nine Technical Administrative Committees (TAC) within SEI:
  • Committee on Analysis and Computation
  • Committee on Bridges
  • Committee on Concrete and Masonry Structures
  • Committee on Dynamic Effects
  • Committee on Metals
  • Committee on Performance of Structures
  • Committee on Special Design Issues
  • Committee on Structural Safety and Reliability
  • Committee on Wood

A Technical Committee is a unit with TAC responsible for carrying out assigned tasks within a specific area of interest to the parent TAC. For example, the Committee on Dynamic Effects oversees the activities of the following technical committees:

  • Seismic Effects
  • Shock and Vibratory Effects
  • Wind Effects

Mission Statement

The purpose of SEC is to foster research and practice in the behavior of structures subjected to earthquakes and application of research results to problems in analysis and design of structures, including buildings, offshore structures, concrete dams, storage tanks, and bridges.
